I just celebrated my birthday a few days ago and something that was top of mind for me was how important it is to live intentionally.
I was telling a friend how easy it can be to get caught up in the daily motion of life and lose focus on what we want and the true essence of life; from the moment we turn adults most people are so focused on work/business and that becomes their entire identity with everything else being an afterthought. I am a big believer in listening to God to guide you every step of the way as I have seen a lot of things in my life come together that were not a result of a deep strategic plan but by just saying yes and following the directions of my inner voice.
But also in other parts of our lives, I believe it is important to be very intentional, especially about living; it is amazing to me how as adults most of our identity is tied to the work we do and how most of our adult life is around work and earning money (to now think that this is what most will do till the day they die or retire at an old age is an interesting and possibly sad thought) never really living but existing barely to survive.
Many people don’t have hobbies or activities that bring them joy and that are not financially motivated they spend time on regularly.
This is also very evident when I speak with people, we introduce ourselves by the work/title we carry and lately, I pause to think about that a little bit more; I remember someone talking about the depression executives face when they retire or when founders sell off their businesses because their identity for the longest time has been tied to the work or business they own and so I am intentionally focused on knowing me beyond the work or business I do/own; how have you navigated discovering and owning your identity outside of what you do or own?
I am choosing to live intentionally, to spend more time outside of work/business on things that enrich my life, and to pause and appreciate the beauty in the world and how much growth we have experienced.
